Japan has been making pottery for a long while.

Various pottery production areas are scattered all over the country and 31 types of pottery are designated as national traditional crafts.

There are two methods of making Japanese pottery
 Do you know the difference?

Pottery

Clay called pottery clay is the raw material. It is also called "earthenware". Since cracks are likely to appear over time, silica stone and feldspar (materials for glass) are mixed with the clay and used to avoid any breaks.

Porcelain

This is called "stone thing". The raw material is ceramic and stones such as quartz and feldspar. These are crushed into powder and mixed with clay before use.

Among the ancient Japanese ceramic kilns, there are currently six ancient kilns

 which have a 900 year old History, going from the late Heian period to Azuchi-momoyama period. Production is still ongoing.
