Traditional Villages

古い町並み

Many traditional villages are still intact today. You will find villages of all kinds across the country and feel like you have stepped back in time. They feature unique architectural style and you can buy amazing handicrafts and local food as you wander around in the typical streets. The beauty of those villages changes over the seasons, offering ever-changing scenery. Some of them are part of UNESCO World Heritage sites. Go for it!

A Treasure for local people

Some villages have survived wars and disasters over time and are still intact today, with traditional houses, typical streets, shops, and unique cityscape. You will experience the reminiscence of the Meiji, Taisho and Showa eras.

FUKUI

This village donated food to the Imperial court of Kyoto. The inhabitants used to bring a huge quantity of mackerel fished in the Sea of Japan up to Kyoto.

NAGANO

This post town played an important role as it was part of the gold transportation to the Edo Shogunate.

There are more than 30 lined-up thatched-roof houses, reminding of the Edo Period's cityscape. Local green onion soba is famous and worth trying!

HYOGO

Nice post town famous for its “Kawabata scenery” where storehouses and river houses are lined up along the river. It is also a place where historical drama took place.

Beautiful post town  built along a stone path that stretches all the way out. It is the first village that initiated the preservation of the ancient cityscape.
